The
Legend Of the Complaining
Neka, the maker of ceremonical umbrellas, gave a final spat to
the
intricate bamboo frame he was working on, then placed it carefully
on a bench inside a small pavilion.
P9Enough
for today", he explained with a smile. "Besides, this
morning 1 promised the children that if they kept the birds off
the rice paddi while I worked,, I would tell them a story this evening."
"Neka,
just what kind of stories do your children like?" 1
asked,
squatting down beside him while he tossed grains of corn to a pet
monkey.
"Well,
the one they like best is about the time when all the animals and
birds complained to the head of the village...."
And
so i came to hear the Legend of the Complaining Geko....
"One
day a Geko went to the Mayor and complained: 'Oh, sir, can you help
me? Will you speak to the Firefly? He keeps me awake all night ....
flashing his light in my eyes."
Now,
the Mayor, who iked to sound important, said: "I will look
into this matter. Come back one week from today for my answer. "
The
Mayor called the Firefly and asked, quite kindly: "Tell me,
why do you have to worry people by flashing your light?"
And
the Firefly, who was a very humble little fellow, put out his torch,
folded his wings and said:
"Oh
mighty sire, I am only passing on the message. I hear the Woodpecker
going tong-tong-tong on the tree trunk - and 1 think it must be
a kul kul warning the village to awake."
Then
the Mayor, anxious to get to the bottom of all this, called the
Woodpecker: "What do you mean, causing all this trouble?"
